Iceland
Iceland, an island country located in the North Atlantic Ocean, is a land of vivid contrasts of climate, geography, culture and dramatic landscapes. It boasts black sand beaches, hot geysers, lava fields, glaciers and mesmerizing waterfalls. The Vatna Glacier (Vatnajökull), Europe’s largest, lies across its ruggedly beautiful mountain ranges in the South East. Despite its high latitude, Iceland has a temperate climate because of the warm offshore Gulf Stream, making it a suitable place for chasing auroras this close to the Arctic.
Project description
I saw my first aurora borealis on the airplane ride to Iceland. I remember seeing these shape-shifting grey clouds outside the airplane window and thought to myself, “This is weird,” so I took out the camera, covered the lens from the cabin lights and shot a few frames. The clouds were wispy green, and I could barely contain my enthusiasm, then, in the next few days, I would be enchanted by this jaw-dropping phenomenon multiple times. Babak and Gisli had us chasing auroras deep into the night during this trip, as weather conditions change on a dime in Iceland, and the need to just go is paramount. The itinerary for this photo trip was incredible, and the weather cooperated to leave an indelible impression of the northern lights in my memory. This island is a magical place; its natural beauty is so phenomenal you can spend a lifetime on this island just soaking in the vistas.
