The drive from Las Vegas to Bishop, CA is about 4hr and 30 minutes.  Once you turn left on Route 266, the lanscapes changes to become more dramatic and enjoyable. Bishop provides ample lodging and is well placed to cover a variety of different landscapes that range from the desert, ancient Bristlecone Pine Forests and the otherworldly Mono Lake. Babak Tafreshi and Mike Shaw are very hands-on in this workshop and the locations are great. After this concluded, I chose to stay for an extra day and made my way alone to the neighboring Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) antenna (one of a network of ten antenna sites across the United States that make up the VLBA, a National Science Foundation project). After a harrowing experience of facing a swarm of mosquitoes that gave me bites the size of golf balls on my forehead during the twilight hours, I was fortunate to have stayed around to witness the spectacular night show of this region. Then I drove to lake Sabrina as the sky was crystal clear and broke all the cardinal rules of being a night sky photographer. I was alone, with no cell phone signal in a place I did not scout during the day. I was the only human in the area for sure and I remember vividly, when I turned the car headlights off, the darkness came rushing in so fast I had to turn the lights back on. Time to breathe. I had to give myself a pep talk and waited for my eyes to dark adapt before heading out. I stayed for about 2 hours jaunting around just enamoured by the reflection of the stars and the Milky Way on this placid lake. I left with one of my favourite images and an amazing experience. Sometime you just have to take that leap of faith.
